In this article we will highlight some of the benifits for changing your forklift operation to lithium batteries, rather than the traditional lead/acid batteries. Worth highlighting is that lithium batteries may not always be the right answer.
Operating in cold conditions
Many warehouses who are storing food are typically operating in cold conditions, sometimes even in freezing conditions. A lithium battery is more resistant to damages and can better handle freezing temperatures. The freezing point for lithiumn itself is 180,5 °C, where lead/acid is -70°C. You might probably think, so why change to lithium? The answer is, when a lead acid battery discharges in freezing conditions the electrolyte acid grows weaker and turns into pure water.
With a litium battery you will not have that problem. The peak performance will remain the same regardless how much you discharge the battery.
Fast charging
A lithium battery gives you the option to charge the battery much faster than the traditional lead/acid batteries. A really great benifit with lithium batteries is their ability to charge when you need it and for how long you need it, where as a lead acid battery, you will need to fully charge it over several hours. You can always keep your forklift running, if you keep charging the battery. An example could be when taking your lunch break, you can set the forklift to charge, to ensure there's enough battery power before the next shift. Suddenly your entire forklift operation will become more flexible.
Save space
Many warehouses have got a fixed area where the forklifts can charge during the night, so they are ready for the next day. When operating a lithium powered forklift you can charge it anywhere, and you do not have to rely on certain areas where you will take up more warehouse space for your forklifts, or electric stackers for that matter. Your forklift operation will quickly become more flexible
Safety
The BMS module that is installed with every lithium battery is an added guarantee for safety. It works like a small computer system, and is designed to monitor the lithium battery while it's operating or charging. There are built-in safety parameters, so the battery does not overcharge or overheat due to any enviromental conditions the forklift may be operating under. However, it always a good practice to inspect the battery now and then, to ensure there's not a lot of dirt or dust damaging the battery.
Emmission and a green profile
There's hardly any emission when using a lithium battery when operating your forklifts. This is especially good when you are working in hygenic areas, such as food where employees will usually need to operate with decontamination as a high priority.
Some suppliers may even require a green profile if you want to do business with them, due to company policies and their efforts to enforcethe U.N. 17 goals.
Should I change my battery power source to lithium?
Well it depends on your requirements. A lead/acid battery is still very benificial for some warehouse. However, If your business operates where higher standards are a requirement, it may now be a good time rethink which power source you should use.
